Well shampoo and conditioner are two different things, remember.... you can get two in one but it's still a combination of two different things. So when your friend said "use any shampoo", she probably wasn't referring to ones that include conditioner. Generally, you can get away with using conditioner every once in a while if you feel the need (and follow up with a deep clean), but conditioner will leave stuff behind in your hair, which is what makes it "shine" etc. Plus conditioner is designed to free hair that is matted etc..... a lot of people actually use it to help when combing out their dreadlocks, because it lubricates/loosens it up so well! I'm not familiar with the brands you've mentioned so far so I can't offer any specific advice there, sorry.

Yeaaaaaaaaah, right. I hope someone here might know the brands, or at least understand product chemistry???
For the conditioning...ok, thank you. I am sure I knew that at some point but had forgotten. It's just the straight hair part (that I still have straight hair), but I guess that hasn't exactly been too dry either...yeah, I'll just wait for thoughts on the other products...

@vacantalleyways,
So here's what is in Rasta Locks And Twist Medicated No More Itch Spray... (SBS 175041)
Pure Distilled Water, Propylene Glycol, Shea Butter, Ginkgo Nut Oil, Essence of Limes and Mangos, Tropical Herbal Extract, Glycerin, Vitamin E, Polyquaternium 10, Beeswax, Carrot Oil, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Passion Fruit Oil, Sea Grape Oil, Fragrance
In bold and black are ingredients that could be considered controversial...
Propylene Glycol is a main component of many anti-freezes, has been known to kill/ harm cats, dogs and other small animals. It is often used as a sweetener and/or preservative. Essence of... this will require a call to the company to find out exactly what was meant by such a vague term. Did they mean essential oil? scent? peels? extract? Tropical Herbal Extract, once again extremely vague and makes me start to wonder what are they trying to hide. Glycerin, this is usually added to give lotions, sprays, pastes etc 'slip' which makes them easier to apply, however, it is the unwated side effect of coating and leaving residue behind preventing whatever you apply it to from absorbing nutrients and potentially leading to fragile skin, hair, teeth etc. Polyquaternium 10 is hydroxyethyl cellulose, yes I realize that doesn't make it any clearer, this is a synthetic ingredient once again used to give slip and is found in KY Jelly (Lube). Methylparaben, is used most often as a preservative in cosmetics, by nature parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Propylparaben... read the line above. Fragrance can be synthetic or natural or naturally derived, in most cases (because it is cheaper) it is synthetic and can cause many adverse reactions such as itchiesm (my term), dandruff, hives and in some cases hair loss.

Ok lipstic , this is a little discouraging...but anyway. (well, i just mean...well, thanks for doing that. I didn't mean to trouble you, but that's informative. and also, I'll totally consider it all and wait for your next comment.) Um, ok well I don't think the next thing was from you so... who can suggest the dry shampoo like for in between wash days??? Like, this wouldn't work or would it??? www.amazon.com/Dove-10079400202441-Dry-Shampoo-Invigorating/dp/B006T8BXF8(it was just the first thing I found) I'd like to find something soon, so I can start not washing? if that makes sense.

oh, can someone answer the question above?
shoot, what thread is this? I'm hoping to do my first ACV wash this weekend (if hubby finds it at the store he's going to tonight). Ohhh, but my question is about the scented oils. Suggestions on these? I think I'm gonna just tough it out with the plain vinegar this time. Sooooo do I want the water coming out clean when I am done? I mean, that's a good sign that I'm keeping them clean right?

I think there's a reason you should specifically use apple cider vinegar.... So I don't know about the regular vinegar.
I do an acv rinse every wash. I use 1 part acv to 2 parts warm water. Add 10 drops peppermint, 6 rosemary, 5 rose and 7 lavender. Sometimes I also add 3 drops tea tree.

Um, so hopefully I'll be able to get that tonight. Also, where does one get these oils? You are from the States, correct?

eh, I'm so difficult. I searched and there are some on Amazon (If I can't find it in Walmart, then it's usually Amazon I'll go). I mean, I am probably making this harder than it is, right? Sorry!

do i update too much? I mean, you folks have probably seen all of these already but...this put things in perspective (ok ok, i know some of you have already told me this similarly, but I suppose this goes into a bit more detail. like that you can use less per wash with dread shampoo vs. regular...maybe?) I'm gonna go for it...soon, and see how much "mileage" I can get.
(added this just in case someone did miss it and/or are new)

I get mine on Amazon or at whole foods.
I use vital goods and a bottle that costs 16 lasts me 3 months. I water it down 50% to make it less harsh on my sensitive scalp, as suggested by Heather, and it's easier to rinse out.

Ohh so it will last longer this way. Is it that harsh on your head??? (no rush on an answer here. I am still using J&J) wait, Johnson and Johnson's baby shampoo is still good right? (no conditioner so it's fine?) I'm pretty sure I read this somewhere, that's why I've been using it, but ugh! I'm having doubts...slightest doubts. Just been thinking about this stuff too much recently. I think I'm getting it though. I've got a few options bookmarked for when I need to restock. I'm just anxious for this deep clean right now. Is it bad if you get dirty water??? ...eh, maybe I should just do it and then ask.
