Hi! This is my second set of dreads, with my first set my hair was very short and they ended up coming undone. I waited a year and a half, and now I'm giving it another go! I started the dreads about a week ago with the help of a friend, but I was unhappy with the sectioning, and ended up with my sweet mom helping my comb out and resection. So these babies are new again, pretty much both sets were formed using twist and rip with backcombing every so often. My hair before dreads: the first try: directly after resectioning: and next day can't wait to see how they change!
First wash- they didn't loosen nearly as much as I expected them to!
1 week today! Not a lot of change, a little messier and the bottom layers have lost most of their "braided" look. The roots are loosening, mostly in the back/bottom layers as well. Here they are in all their glorious frizziness-
2 weeks! Trimmed the loose hair in front a bit, and the dreads are definitely loosening at the roots quite a bit. So much frizz!
Three weeks!
Loopies
6 weeks! Lots more loops happening, but no shrinkage yet.
10 weeks! and this crazy loopy thing!
My head is full of these loops, I love it!
12 weeks- the bottom layers are really nice and solid and round, the middle layers are totally flat and loopy, and the very top ones are still tiny and braided-looking. Ahh. I stopped Palm rolling a while ago and I'm wondering if I should start again.
3 months- I'm starting to really wish I had done all backcomb instead of twist and rip, and made them bigger. I feel like they're so stringy and braided looking :/ I'm hoping as they mature they'll gain some nice thickness. I love them but I'm really frustrated with myself for doing them this way.
Some of them are only dreaded for a few inches and the rest is loose hair
3 months+ 1 week- I'm really glad I take photos because it feels like nothing is happening then I look at older photos and realize how much they've changed so far!
And a fun photo from hooping today with dreadlings everywhere
Combined the two tiny ones in the back, and the rest are starting to thicken up too!
Hehe they're actually looking like dreads now!
3.5 months, I have one just starting to double over on itself!
4 months! Feeling pretty good about the progress, I'm thrilled with the thickening that's been happening! I did my first BS/ACV soak, and didn't notice too much difference from that, but my hair does feel nice and clean.
4.5 months things are happening! I'm so in love with them lately. It's kind of hard not to compare when most of the dreadheads in my life have nicely maintained dreads, crocheted or extended etc. and they look so nice and uniform. But I really want to do this the low maintenance way and am getting much more confident with my loopies and bumps and the craziness!
5 months today! The ones in the back continue to thicken on either side of my head, I'm getting some crazy loops.
Some close ups of a few-
These ones have some intense shit going on, this is the side of my head I sleep on and you can totally tell!
Here are comparisons of a couple dreads.. 1.5 months of difference between these pics.
5.5 months- I woke up with some length difference this morning! Everything on the left side of my head is looking like crazy!
A few photos from a hike today at 5.5 months
Picking leaves and forest ground debris out of dreads is a pain in the ass!
SO EXCITED to be nearing 6 months!
Here we are, 6 months!
Some of the bottom layers are coming along nicely
6.5 months-
Someone took this photo of me busking the other day, I love seeing how the back of my head looks!
7 months plus a few weeks there doesn't seem to be much change in my top layers of dreads lately, while the ones in the bottom are tightening up every day! Any reason for this? Here's a crappy photo of the bottom layers- and here's some of what's going on at the top- I'll get some better photos for an 8 month update soon!
Fresh out of the shower, and dry a couple hours later
8 months today! Took the dreadies for their first dip in the ocean and they loved it! My scalp feels so clean, and my dreads tightened up a bit
9 months! It's so hard to get accurate photos of how they look. The sides are still kind of in the baby looking stages, super thin and loopy. The back is locking up more though!
Here's how I've been wearing them the most lately-
9.5 months- I had a bit of a crisis the other day and combed out the tips of my bot layer and redid them, then immediately regretted it. On the bright side, I did gain some length from doing that and I got a look at the inside of my dreads. I found what I thought was mold, and it turned out to be lint thankfully! Other than the lint, my hair is in pretty good shape, yay! I'm a bit concerned about one of my top dreads, the root seems rather thin but I think I may just be overly worried. Photos are from two sides of it, it's kind of long and thin I guess?
And here's a dreadie pic feat. My big forehead
A few more random ones- from the front it's still not apparent I have dreads
10 months! A friend that has a real camera took a few photos for me this week , my dreadies are kinda visible in this one
11 months! This month was weird.. I had a few days of really disliking them and considered combing them out. I mostly kept them tied up in a bun for those few days, and all of a sudden I started loving them again. Does anyone else have weird phases or is it just me? I'm definitely glad I didn't do anything to them! I *think* I might be gaining some length. Looking forward to a year!
Ok... I'm almost embarrassed here- I was having such a hard time with my anxiety and ocd that I was kind of taking out on my dreads. The obsessive/compulsive side kicked in when I got stressed and I'd find myself subconsciously pulling at individual dreads until my scalp was sore. I ended up combing out all but three dreads, It felt like I needed to start over somehow. I had my mostly regular hair for a week or two: and didn't feel like myself. I ended up restarting my dreads, and I guess I'll just continue my timeline from here. I almost didn't want to admit it here that I brushed out, but you guys are always wonderful and kind <3 soooo...
Day 1 33 new dreadies, plus my 3 original now year-old dreads. Twist and rip with a little backcomb, like my first set. I plan to do everything much the same, with no maintenance. It feels good but weird to start over!
Somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks, all those loose roots not so bothersome now that I know how it goes though!
1 month-
1.5 months, getting some waves and funky ends!
3 months- some more bumps, not too much change
4 months- they're starting to gain a little more thickness, yay! I did a bs/ACV soak this month. I feel like this set is progressing a little more slowly than the last one, maybe because they're thicker this time. I'm gaining more loops, which I love!
4 months and 1 week- you can see some loops here, and brand new septum piercing!
5 months! They got a bit thicker this month, and new loops are forming every day.
Some new bumps 5.5 months
6 months!
My four year old took this for me- I need to ask him to take photos for me more often!
8 months!
8.5 months drunk bathroom pic- they're getting nice and thick! And I've gotten a lot of compliments on them this month, so that's always nice ^.^
9 months! I'm attempting to combine two smaller dreads, so I put a bead over both of them and I guess I'll just wait and see what happens!
