The frizz is your friend, but it can be annoying. You can palm roll them in but that's usually temporary. The longer the loose hair gets, I find they suck into existing dreads at the root easier. That's where you get that "webbing" going on.

Yeah, wearing hats to hide my dread fro is a catch 22. The more I wear a hat/beanie the more the fro grows. Palm rolling and/or rubbing them into existing dreads work. So does using product to slick 'em back in. This is mostly temporary and eventually they find a permanent home.

Hi All !
still on my journey... just having some scalp difficulties and looking for advice or insight
I have to tie my hair up and unfortunately brush back the new growth and gel my hair for work since I am a restaurant manager. I hate to do so but it is necessary to avoid having to comb out this set too
i noticed that the locks at my temple area are producing itchy, scabby , bumps on the scalp skin in that section . i get some relief when washing BUT they do come back and i dont know what it is.
tension bumps from tying hair up or " bad sectioning " ? i was told that since i didnt go to a loctitian and had a friend sectioning my head that didnt start from bottom up i would have to start over ... is this true ?
i will post pictures in a few as i am typing this from a laptop
also my hair literally SUCKS up any moisture and still looks dry
i guess my question is what are these itchy scabby bumps on my temple area
do i have to come out and restart with proper sectioning ?
and how long is the " ugly phase ? i have 3b/3c curly hair. i do not do regular maintenance but wouldnt mind if i knew how and more places used plant based vegan products.
i sometimes feel like i want to comb them out but as soon as i touch them and look at pictures / see growth and think of the growth to come i immediately change my mind

Messy phase for me is about a year, I'm 3c as well...but then again you know as well as I do 3c can always look messy!!! Hehehe... Hats and beanies will exacerbate the fly-aways for me so if you're in the messy stage and wearing head wear all the time, you can expect a little "untidiness."
Sectioning is so foreign to me. I've never sectioned a set intentionally and they turned out fine. At this stage, I wouldn't redo 'em if they were mine.
As for the itchy, scabby thing; I think that goes hand in hand. Take care of the itch and the scabs will go.
How often are you washing and what are you using? I'd probably start there.

So totes awesome hair you got there! I think I can see some tightening in your recent pix!
Have you tried aloe juice or gel to moisturize? I used the juice as a final rinse/leave in conditioner on my first set when one dread actually broke off...remedied the dryness and hair felt stronger.
Coconut oil should be helping too, do you mix any essential oils with it? Some can be a bit drying.
And yeah frequency of washing probs plays the largest role...

The "ugly phase" is different depending on the person. For some it can take longer than others. I've noticed that it's actually not as bad as you see yourself so I wouldn't really call it the ugly phase. It can be easy to become obsessed over how your hair looks. You look awesome in your pics! Mine are 13 months now & they just keep getting better & better as the time passes so just hang in there. I remember being super happy with mine around 7 months. Then again even more happy around 9 months. At 1 year they were even better so I'm looking forward to where they'll be in another year. Also, I put aloe vera juice from the leaves on my head every once in a while since I have a plant at home.

I've retwistdd with aloe but it leaves white flames in my hair ( /straight from the leaf ) I use only coconut oil and water and wash once a week I will take note of your tips thank you !
