Hello everyone, My name is Cody and I am very interested in dreadlocks and have been for as long as I can remember I have not used a comb in about a month and I use Dolly locks nag Champa shampoo. I slowly tapered down from every three days to every five or so. The trouble I am having is that my hair stays greasy and is t really doing much at all, I understand that the neglect/natural freeform method takes time but wow. Any tips will help.
Also I am an electrician and the father of a very amazing special needs child. Pleasure to meet you all.

I started my dreads with the twist and rip method, but I think this should still apply to your situation. When I first started my hair I washed often (every day or every other day), as there are oils that naturally seep out of the scalp. Your hair needs to be clean in order for it to lock up, otherwise it won't stick together properly. Once you start noticing sections sticking together you can spread out washing them. I tend to have an oily scalp so I diluted sea salt in warm water and would spritz my hair every other day to help dry it out more. The method you are using might take you years to see any real sections forming. You should check out James' timeline to get a better idea of how much time it took him to start seeing some actual progress. I hope that you enjoy your new journey and keep us updated with your progress. dreadlocktruth.com/thread/144/9-years-natural-formation

Thank you for the quick reply and I have been on the fence with the spray but I am willing to try it as I go along this journey.

Hey all! My dreads are only 3 months old. In a love/Hate relationship with them! Couple questions I couldn’t find answers to among the forums... do you cover your hair when showering? Do you cover them when sleeping? Thanks! I’m a mom of 2 and a wife of 16 years Love camping, fishing all the outdoorsy stuff.

Do you cover them when sleeping? Thanks! I’m a mom of 2 and a wife of 16 years Love camping, fishing all the outdoorsy stuff. I covered them when sleeping at the start because my hair was short and so they'd get a little Sideshow Bob-esque if I didn't encourage them to lay down. I don't cover them at all now (and haven't for 8-9 years), but there are plenty of people who do. I think it comes down to if they get in your way whilst sleeping and I keep mine too short to be an issue. In terms of helping the process, I'd say leave them uncovered because all the movements will encourage knots. You don't need to cover them whilst washing, either. It is to be expected that my might unravel somewhat at the stage you're in but around 6-8 months is when they start to come together

Hello! I am 45 years old, I live on a Greek island and my black and blue dreads are exactly 1 yr old this month. I love knitting alternative stuff, making food, tattoos and piercings. I have a dog and three cats and a human partner I made my dreads myself (how would you ever know lol) , some are super thick, some look like lambs tails. I've had one lot of maintenance which I didn't like - I prefer the messy look.

Let me try this again Lol! Hey everyone, my name is Sara! A little about me, I started my journey with dreads on May 9th of this year. I've wanted them for a long time so I am excited. I started mine by loosely twist and ripping sections. No product used in initial process. I had a friend section then I t&r'ed it myself. Wash and rinse with baking soda the ACV about every 5 to 7 days.my maintenance involves keeping them seperate, lightly spraying ends and roots with my homemade sea salt spray, and using light coconut oil on my scalp when/If it gets dry and itchy. So far I'm happy with how it's going. My hair is super straight, and different shades of red. The biggest issues I'm having are the ends not knotting up at all and a couple of them coming undone. I know patience is key and all will come in time though. Anyway so that's my dread story so far. A little about me I'm a level 36 single mom of a rowdy wild 10 year old boy and most of my days are spent trying to take him a bit lol, anyway I'm glad to be here and I look foward to meeting everyone!

Hi Sara. The site has become quite vacant of late but we do keep poking our noses in. Fantastic to have you join. Do post pics of your hair.
