I've been working on my partners dreads for months now and the only real issue is the new hair growing isn't dreading itself, like I've been told it should. Like thed tips of his dreads near his scalp are not dreaded. What can I do?

The roots should always be a bit loose, as it gives it chance to find its own comfortable way of knotting plus reduces the stress on the scalp. Mostly everyone here will have an inch or two of undreaded hair from their roots/scalp. If it were dreaded, the hair would be stiff and sticking out from his head like sideshow Bob.

There's usually around an inch or so of loose hair from the scalp into the dread. As Dave said, this is a good thing and it makes it all a lot more comfortable.

I have one dread that tightened up almost all the way to the roots and it is so annoying because it pulls all the time. Loose roots are much more comfortable. I can't wait until the roots on this dread grow out a bit more.
