I am new to all of this. While I am sure I could start my dreads I my own. I worry about the back of my head as well as the length of my hair ( it's down to my butt). I am looking for people who have experience either in doing their own dreads or in helping someone else do theirs. I have NO idea where to look, seeing how everyone seems to say not to pay to have them done at a salon. I live in the Berkshires. And would love some help!!! Any takers?!?!?

I don't have any suggestions for finding someone to do it for you, but I installed my dreads (t&r) myself with hair that was five inches past my bum so I can tell you if you're faced with doing it yourself it's totally doable--just might take a while... ten days I spent doing mine, and that was only t&r'ing halfway down the length. the sectioning at the back is definitely a challenge, I did it in layers starting from the bottom up: if you tie it up loosely but securely on the top of your head and separate out a row at a time with a rattail comb it's actually not as hard as you'd think though.

what willowbranches said is probably the consensus here. Can't say mine was quite that long, but long enough and I did it too (partial dreads tho...still, I did a few one day and then a few more the next week and so on. You could do like this or spend many hours and arm muscle and do it in a few days. Realistically it would be a few days i think.) Um, also, it's no secret how much I adore these videos, but they are very helpful too. Here's a few ideas to get you started. "all you need are ...hands!..."
