I don't want to be judged, I want to be assessed only by my performance and effort made to overall company's result. If atmosphere is bad, then I'll leave without doubts!

Yeah. Maybe it is different where you live but sadly this part of the world just doesn't work that way.

See, I've been hugely fortunate in that I've never had to apply for a job with long dreadlocks. When I got my first job, they were so small that it just looked like spikey hair so I kind of stealth-locked in that case as they just grew out. I worked there for 5 years, and then my last job interview came right after I'd chopped that set off. I've been Self-Employed for the majority of the 8 years that I've had this set and was at Uni in their first few years.... if I wind up having to go to any job applications, in the near future, I'm going to be really nervous about my appearance lol.

They don't care now, it's more going through the messy stage that wouldn't be tolerated. We have a strict dress code about maintaining a tidy appearance. No hats or think headbands allowed. Yours are more mature so you should be fine. We talk a lot about dreads and jobs. It's all about how you present in the interview. If you're confident, well-prepared, and have a great set of skill, hopefully no one will judge you by your hair. And if they do, would you want to work for that type of employer? Yeah I actually got my current job before I had long hair again, put my gauges back in and way before dreads. I have had several jobs that I am quite sure I would not have gotten because of appearance i.e. Tattoos, gauged ears, piercings. But after I established my work ethic and skills once in said jobs. I got away with getting a lot of tattoos and eventually getting approved for dreads. It had to go to the regional level and my regional manager is kind of an old school redneck/ex military guy from Pittsburgh. I was on the fence whether he would say ok. It took less than 30 secs for him to say he didn't care on the phone. West Virginia is fairly behind in times when it comes social trends. My town has a population of around 32,000 and i have maybe seen 20 people with dreads in my life and I have always lived here. Of course I haven't seen every person here!

I'm in the same boat Grant. I didn't have dreads when I started my job 5 years ago. I've proven myself as an employee and they're now more tolerant of my personal style. I am also very respectful and follow our policy on covering up tattoos and I wear jewelry that hides my gauged ears. When I teach I don't give a shit, but that's because I am finishing my degree at a highly respected institution and have that piece of paper that says I know what I'm talking about. I don't know how my dreads will affect me teaching at other institutions though.

I work as a zookeeper and the company I work for has no particular policy on hair colour or style. It's entirely at the managers discretion - and I started brightening my hair over a few months to go back to being "my" hair colour and then stealth dreaded by keeping them under a hat (it helped I started mine in the winter) until now where I let them free at work.
As I didn't dread my bangs or fringe though I can keep them tied up for a tidy appearance when I have to - and due to my job being very manual and hands on, inside bushes and up trees, they tend to be tied back often.
We are hopefully getting to a point where it won't matter anymore. Not yet, but getting there.

Yours look very tidy and I can totally see someone in a medical or a teaching profession with your hair. It is the beginning stages where i feel most employers may have issue.

It's tough to start with but then you're just glad it's over by the time you're done lol. I helped my ex comb out her dreads and it took the two of us around 18 hours.
