Well, how many dreads are you aiming for? 12 is a very low number, for sure (assuming you mean on your whole head), I have about 35.
You definitely won't be able to tie them back like the first two pictures because those dreads are much thinner.
There are other options than combing out.... can you split them? I've done it on a few, you start from the root and slowly pull it apart up to the top (which can take several hours over a couple of days) but bare in mind the dreads it creates will be half the size of the one they came from.

i should have said this there is 12 on the back of my head i still have all the sides that is dreading by neglect. the 12 dreads on the back dont even cover the complete back of my head just a there is still about 5, 1/2" sections before the side of my head starts... i still have all this hair that im going neglect with.

I'm no expert on these things but I think if you're going for something like the first 2 photos, your sections on the back are too large, they will most likely end up like the last photo.
You could try to split the sections if you don't want to brush out and restart, I did so with a few larger ones on my head when my locks were around 10 months and it worked fine. Just need to watch out that you don't make the roots too thin when splitting.

Also, for the buns like the ones you posted, your hair will need to be much much longer so be prepared for it to take 4+ years, as the hair you neglect will probably shrink a lot! But yes, you might want to go for thinner locks.

I'm at the point where I have to throw them over a shoulder before visiting a bathroom. They do get longer and longer.

james Skizz has said that he has to be careful of his locks not going into the bowl lol. I don't know if I want them that long, to be honest... they look cool but it must be a nightmare to keep them clean and they'd take so long to dry out.

Yeah. I think the longer ones look awesome. Like I like how long Christians are. I would like to be able to tie them up in cool ways without hair things. But i already catch them smashed between my back and seat when I drive. And i cant imagine them being long enough to impede peeing or taking a crap.
Also as Paul said - The drying would be insane. I actually pm'd Olly asking about it because I was very curious about that. Drying is the only issue i have with dreads and mine are like just at chin-neck level and they take me a good toweling, head banging, toweling again and then being down for 4-6 hours to dry. I don't normally have time to blow dry.
But i have thought about if i would cut and how i would physically even do it.

Damian Marley and Brian from Shadow's fall are two other insanely long sets I can think of. I think Olly's are the longest on here I have seen pics of. @paul How many times or how often do you trim yours? Example of years of growth.

I think I trimmed them once maybe 6 years ago but that was only a few inches and that's the only time. My hair was about 3 inches when I started them.
He hasn't come over to the new site yet (he's been travelling for a few months), but Skizz has the longest set on here, which are down past his waist now. They're longer than his girlfriend's legs lol.
