I am 9 days into my loc journey. I was for some reason under the impression that my locs would start from closer to my scalp. I am beginning with straight hair that is to the bottom of my back. Each strand of hair has chose its loc for the most part, but only the midstrand is knotted. Like there is an entire 5-6 inches from my scalp to the beginning knots. Is this normal? And they all want to combine constantly. I keep separating multiple times a day, but they ten to just want to combine and form one large knot. Just keep separating? Thanks!

Sounds like you're in for some awesome, early progress! With my freeform set, I had to separate sometimes as much as 4x a day! It'll let up eventually! Looking great so far!!!

I wouldn't worry too much, I think most people find that their locks begin to knot up from the tips down. As you experience shrinkage, the knots will get closer to your scalp. Also worth noting that you don't actually want to have no loose hair at the roots as that can cause some discomfort as they get heavier. Most people find that the knots don't really begin for an inch or so.
