I'm only 3 months into this journey but I'm going to take a stab at this! The elders of the group will give better advice I'm sure! I know that it takes a year or so for hair to truly "lock" up.. a lot of people's get loose after a couple weeks but as long as they hold their sections it's all good..they will eventually do their thing. Patience is key during this process!

Hey. What you're describing is completely normal as most hair doesn't lock up into dreads for between 6-8 months. There's usually a "messy" stage that soon follows their installation in which they can come mostly if not almost completely undone.... the only thing you have to worry about is the sections staying defined.
I know it seems counter-intuitive, but the best advice is to not re-backcomb them and just let them do their own thing as your hair finds its own way into knots. I'd recommend checking out some of the timelines in the 'Timeline' section (or checking out LazyDread's timeline video below) to see how your locks will change over the first year.
If you don't want to just leave them then I'd recommend doing twist and rip rather than backcombing as, in my experience, they tend to stay in for longer.
