Hi! My name is Coco and this is the 4th time I have dreadlocks.
This time I started them with not so long hair, so they are at shoulder length.
A few days ago, a very kind person donated her dreads to me (she was cutting them off) so I could extend mine. Is something I've done before.
The thing is, she didn't washed her hair too much, so I decided to wash her dreads before attaching them to my head and I wasn't able to get rid of some musty smell.
I've did a LOT of vinegar/baking soda washes. Like.. a LOT. And they still feel very oily and the water gets cloudy.
So today after the 4th deep cleanse, I tried first with a clarifying shampoo and pouring boiling water on them. That seemed to get a huge amount of dirt and oil from inside the dreadlocks. So after the 5th time and seeing that it wasn't getting too much better, I just got feed up and put a pan in the fire with water and soaked the deadlock there, leaving them to boil for 5 minutes. Now... The water in the pan went the same colour as the apple vinegar, and it smells kind of oily. When I removed the dreadlocks, they were VERY VERY oily! So I tried 2 more times, 5 minutes each time, and they are still oily! It's amazing.
I'm thinking that maybe she used so weird wax in her dreads, or (by the smell...) could be she was using too much essential oils? I don't know what else can I do, since the water keeps getting brown and the dreads feel oily and smelly. I wouldn't want to throw them to the garbage, because their ex-owner is a very kind person, and I feel somehow like is not right to get rid of her dreads like that. But I won't put them in MY head like this! Any suggestions?
Thanks to all!
Coco
