Hey guys.
BACKGROUND:
I've had dreadlocks for about three years now. Before them, my curly hair would dread by itself, and I had to comb often. When I decided to stop combing my hair, my dreadlocks formed naturally (I did help the process by separating them at the root, so they wouldn't clump into massive locks). I used no wax products, or anything of the sort. During this process, I continued to use regular, drug store shampoo (i.e. Pantene, Dove, and other garbage). I would sleep with my wet hair in a towel.
MY CARE REGIMEN:
About two years in, I realized how ignorant I was of proper hair care. Luckily, I had no developed mold. I switched to shampoo for dreadlocks, and stopped sleeping with wet hair in a towel. Sometimes I'll mess up and sleep on my hair while it's wet, but this is less than 10% of the time.
MY PROBLEM:
Sometimes I pick apart my dreadlocks out of stress. I do this when they're completely dry. I can usually pull out about 50% of the hair in the dreadlock, and the rest of it falls right out, still in lock form. When this happens, the top of the dread has been picked away, and I can see that the inside is moist. It is filled with a grey/white fluffy, sticky substance, that disintegrates when I rub it between my fingers. When it disintegrates, the texture becomes almost like a lotion on my hands. It doesn't smell bad at all — oddly, it smells good, like my dreadlock-shampoo. I'm not sure if this is because it IS my hair products, or because my hair products have left a scent. I've attached some photos of my worst cases.

Please let me know what you believe this is, whether it's fixable (doubt it), how to prevent it in the future, and whether I should take out my dreads.
A sincerest thank you for taking the time to read my situation!
