Hey! I'm Ky from Idaho. I've been lurking on this forum for 4 or 5 months now, and started my own set of dreads two months ago. I used mainly TnR with some backcombing, did all the sectioning and twisting and ripping myself, and it took around 9 hours... which I was NOT PREPARED FOR. haha.
That said, here's day one/morning of day two when I finally finished putting them in.
Anddd here's after about a week and a half. They mellowed out a lot from the first day and got really loose.
Changes were already happening after 2 and a half weeks! Getting loopy but still really loose.
After three weeks, they got a lot more solid very quickly. I started needing to separate them before and after each wash or they would all tangle together and form MegaDread 2000 😂
I got really excited when I reached one month, and did an open wrap on some of them with holiday-colored thread to celebrate 😊
Here's around a month and a half. I took out the wraps after Christmas because i just didn't like the way they felt...like my hair was too restricted or something. (Sorry for bad quality)
These next few were all leading up to and around my two month mark. You can see they shrunk a lot and they're getting pretty unruly.
I'm having a hard time because part of me loves it, and the other part of me has terrible social anxiety and doesn't want to go in public haha. I'm the only one I know personally with dreads, and every day I get the "WHAT are you doing to your hair?? Why?!"
So i've been pretty self conscious but it helps a lot to look at all of your timelines. Even though everyone progresses in different ways with different methods, they ALL end up looking beautiful and I'm excited to see how my hair will change. I plan on continuing to update.
Any suggestions in the meantime are welcome of course, because I am new to this. 😅
Very happy to be part of this community and it's nice to meet all of you!
Here is my *approximately* two and a half month update and a couple pics of individual dreads. Quite a few of them are doing THIS thing:
And I'm not sure how I feel about it 😂 but generally they are all feeling a lot more solid and less squishy. I love how low maintenance this is.
More to come soon
I've reached 3 months! My hair is definitely starting to look noticeably like dreadlocks and I've been getting compliments and insults from lock-lovers and lock-haters respectively.
The locs in the back are rounding out nicely and i've lost probably half my length. It used to be down to my mid-back and now it's above my shoulders!
I usually wear half of it up like this:
...or in little messy twin buns (my locs have gotten too short/thick to put it all in one bun!)
I tried to upload a couple videos because it's a lot easier to tell what stage my dreads are at, but I can't get it to work  do they need to be uploaded to a different site and then linked here?
Anyway, I've been getting a lot more confident and loving my untamed hair more every day. I can't wait to see how it'll be at 6 months, a year, and beyond thanks all for your encouraging words
Here's a mini update; just a comparison pic to show how much my dreadies have changed already. Pic on the left was at 1.5 months, and the pic on the right was yesterday at 3.5 months!
Well folks, it's about time for my 4 month update. My dreadlings haven't felt like they've changed much, but looking back at pictures is wild.
Here's about two weeks ago, post-shower:
And these were just the other day. Some of them are tight and rounding out beautifully:
...and some are loose, wild, and completely different lengths:
Here's what they look like pulled up for work.
And here's what they look like down.
I love looking at the back of my head because my dreadies look so chunky and mature. I can't wait for my ten thousand tons of loose hair to at least TRY to attach itself to nearby dreads hahaha.
See you in a month.
...
Well, i forgot the five month update, but it's okay because my dreadies haven't changed much at all. They're just STILL SHRINKING. my hair hasnt been this short since I was 5 so I'm having trouble dealing with it haha. Anyway, here's to half a year

More from five months:
And these are today at 6 months! (I had to get up at 4:30 AM for work and wasn't happy about it haha)
So, tons of shrinkage (am I done yet??) and i don't really know what to do with my dreads because they're too short to even tie back. I wear the same headband almost every day to cover up my frizzy roots! How did you guys wear your short adolescent dreadies?
