Most of my dreads formed by folding up on themselves, and they are ridiculous clumpy. Does that mean I'm doomed to blunt ends once they've matured? (Nothing wrong with blunted ends, just not ideally what I want)

Nope, you can continue to tease them out gently into wisps using a thickish needle or the like! I tend to make mine wispy when I can be bothered xD

My first set had the bell-bottomed folded look. I waited for them to gain length then cut the chunky bits off then combed a little out to get the wispy ends

My ends blunt themselves a few times a year, I just get out the fine toothed comb and brush them back out.

The club ends can definitely be wispied out, I did almost all 130 of mine this past august/september. I snipped a minimal chunk off the end of each club, then soaked the raw edges about an inch up in watered down conditioner (like a tablespoon in 8 ounces of water) and worked that in, after which I used a leather needle poked perpendicularly through the side starting about a millimeter up from the cut then pull away down away from the dread to yank snarls out (a small crochet hook would work for this too, I didn't care for it though, seemed too prone to just tearing through the hair rather than dragging the little loop bunches out) plus a sturdy flea comb to untease. Takes a while depending on how tight/large your clumps are; mine were not super big but they were two years old, took me probably three weeks doing about 7 a day. If the clubs are still youngish and on the loose side I'd recommend waiting until they tighten down or you'll just find they reclub. Totally worth the wait and the effort though ^_^

Where's your timeline! I must see!
