Perfectly normal. Um, my issue is that only the ends wanted to lock up at first, so thats like 6 or 7 inches of loose roots! Hehe but thatwas neglect method. Perhaps you arent doing the t&r so tight? Be careful of doing it too close to the scalp, but you want to rip, so to speak, a few times before you twist again. You should feel a firm knot before twisting again. I have done many of my dreads with tandr as well and have very smooth fine hair and so I know u really have to work them in. umm... but yes, they will losen, and then tighten again. It's a crazy cycle, but eventually you get dreads. oh, rebackcombing? I think the best would be to redo it entirely...of course I wouldnt do that because I dont care so much right now about looks. But I did t&r over the upper section on a few, with the bottom still knotted. Problem might be that you get sortof a hole in your dread, but I mean, my oldest IS still dreading there, there just isnt AS much of a knot as the rest. Its near the end tho, so if I HAVE TO, I can trim it later. Well...just an idea, but I probably shouldnt recommend it. Hehe I mean, you should get a veteran dreader's opinion on that. I wasnt able to view the pic or pics but the profile one looks awesome! Like I wouldn't worry too much!

My hair started dreading at the ends and blunting themselves before they dreaded anywhere else. I used tnr and neglect. Eventually the whole section ended up dreading. Mine are now almost three years old and fine.

I had a few that I really thought were gonna come out at about a month or two in, and it was hard not to fiddle with them. But then, over a few weeks they started to knot up. Some did come all the way out, and I just redid them with tnr where I knew it would be a pain to keep the loose hair out of their neighbors. Some areas I left because I know they'll dread over the next year or so.
With dreads there seems to be a few constants and a lot of variables. That they will dread is a constant, how they form seems to vary. If they're held together in sections, even if what's holding is toward the tips, the hair is still being made to interact with itself in the section, so eventually it will knot together. If it comes completely out you can tnr them again. Eventually they'll hold, but it's possible you'll have loose roots for quite awhile.

Besides, tight roots suck. They pull, they stick out weird, and they look unnatural. Loose-ish roots hang better and are more comfortable. But I totally get the concern for them seeming to not be doing much. But really, at thirty days they're still so new, I wouldn't worry too much.

I agree with Kevin on that^! Tight roots tend to tug at the scalp in an ohh sooo uncomfortable way. Stick up all funky and weird at times. Ha. Enjoy the looseness while ya can bro. And they are just wee babies, so given time they will turn out supa awesome! Enjoy your journey traveler
