I'm starting my new set of locks, and I'm wondering should I Backcomb, Twist and rip, or freeform? (I have 5 1/2 to 6 inch hair) which method might suit my super straight hair best?

If you have the patience for it then stopping combing/keeping clean is by far the easiest way. My hair is straight and fine naturally, and being impatient I went with a combination of backcombing and twist & rip (like tiny fishtail braids almost) to try to lock the knots in. They fell out though sort of kept the sections, and after trying again and them falling out a second time I largely left them to it. Hair will lock up eventually. We've got a few members who have waited years and come out with gorgeous sets - James and Banjo are two I can think of off the top of my head. Have a look through the timelines section of the forum because everyone has a different experience. The main thing is not to get too despondant when your hair doesn't do what you want or expect it to. All part of the fun

Thank you saralcat, I'll just let my hair all around grow out and wash with my Dreads Uk shampoo and go freeform/neglect. ~Peace, Love, and devine overstandings.~

You don't need dreads Uk shampoo. don't buy into it. Yeah check out some timelines. Don't look at mine, it might put you off as mine took a few years to freeform, but some folk that used to be on our old site got really nice natural dreads in months. Yeah jealous!

If i started again I'd probably T&R. Then again I'd be more likely to do nothing as it worked last time, even though it took forever.

James- Dreads UK is the only deadlock friendly shampoo that i have at the time, and my hair gets really really greasy if I don't wash it, also I will check your timeline out because I also want to grow my patience in my lock journey. I admire people who have lots of patience and I'm striving to grow in patience and grow from it. ~Peace, Love, and Overstanding.~

I know a few of us use Lush shampoo bars, me included, but use whatever works for you. Just as long as it's not conditioning.

Yes, DO check out all of those timelines!! They are MY inspirations too Mine is taking awhile too, and it turns out (i didn't realize Sarah did t&r and all that)...but yeah, well mine keep falling out too! I mean, I'm going natural, but with a bit of wool rubbing, finger rubbing, I tried a few t&r, sortof a backcomb with fingers...eh, but like I said, it's falling out, but it's still maintaining sections and knotting in it's own way. Lush bars- I used Seanick. I love it! Smells good and is moisturizing. But I wanted to try a liquid shampoo, so I'm actually currently using Dollylocks. you can read all about my fun adventures (hehe) with this, if you are curious. And also, I'm really happy with the service there too, fyi. dreadlocktruth.com/thread/346/love-dollylocks-me Dollylocks is actually currently working well, b ut I will probably go back to the Lush bar in the winter, as I really need the extra moisturizing then.

I've used Squeaky Green and Seanik mostly. I tend to switch a between them depending on how I feel, but I like them and they work for me.

Been not combing my hair at all, my hair is starting get really messy. The freeform method is a lot more interesting opposed to back comb or twist and rip.

The easiest way to dread is to let it go. The hardest way to dread is to let it go.

Jxbx, my first set(s) were all backcombed but they fell out so I have decided to try free forming my loss the time.
