Hey you all. What a nice forum. This is my first post/thread (excuse my English, I'm a Dane ) I have had dreads for almost 1,5 year now, and I love it (backcombing and crochet hook method made by hairdresser). A few days ago, I started dreading my bangs. Before that I have had them undreaded, but I was tired of that look, so I decided to go fulldreaded. I started with the twist and rip method with robberbands. I didn't really liked it, cause I wanna make them solid enough to attach extensions. So I began with backcombing and the crochet hook method. But I find it really hard to make them solid enough. They are really thin, and I think it's difficult to grab the hair with the crochet hook and built a 'dread'. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The dreads the hairdresser made turned out solid from the beginning. He managed to make them so thight, that I could attach exstensions to them if I wanted to (I didn't cause they were long enough). Should I just keep backcomb and use the crochet hook and they will be solid in a few days? Or should I just leave them and accept that there will go months before they will be solid enough to attach extensions? Thank you.

Welcome! Random fact-one of the first forum people I ever met is from Denmark! I also knew a Dane at my university for a few months. Okay, back to dreads. I'll keep this short for now as I'm sure others with have things to add. T&R-good method! Don't give up on it! Something you will need to learn (maybe check out the other timelines) dreadlocks take a long time to mature. So, they may look thin for a long time. AND! I also hesitate to encourage crochet. This does help create the look, but it's risky. And, well you can't see it because I dont have pics, but take my word for it, I destroyed mine, and I'm not a stupid person, but it's easy to do it wrong. So...take some time, let them do their thing while you research a bit more. You've definitely come to a great place though! let me justadd, because i saw Ken on here....if you are headfast on using crochet, do ask. We can find good sources for you to do it right. But i do know that wax is generally frowned upon on this site because many have had problems with it, not all, ok i havent used it so i couldnt give testament either way. But, yes, just do your research.

Haircare, thank you for your answear. I don't want my new babies to mature right now - I know it takes time and I like the process with all its fuzzyness and loops . I just want them more solid. The dreads I have on the rest of my head was solid from the beginning. Of course they are just starting to really mature now after 1,5 years, but already the first day after I had them done they were ready to attach exstentions on. So I don't know what is different now? Could the reason be that the sections on my forehead is much smaller and the hair shorter than it was on the back of my head? And is there any solution? But yeah, I should probably be careful with the crochet hook. And I would never put wax in my hair, so that's no problem. Thank you.

The easiest way to dread is to let it go. The hardest way to dread is to let it go.

Yeah, sound like a tough issue. Maybe try going natural until sections form, then take those sections and T&R or backcomb.

Hey again! Sorry! I think I misinterpreted your questions a bit the first time. But I thi k I got it now...and well to your followup question about the bangs sections being to thin maybe...yes, maybe that is the case. And I think jxbx has a good suggestion for that. But haha this will again just take quite some time...well, it took me almost 3.5 months before I even got any noticable neglect sections and they were thin, but are thickening up with more time. So...yeah. either go back to the salon, or be patient. I think most here would opt for the patience thing, but I know there are a few who have crocheted and crocheted properly. ^^

Thanks. Some days have past now, and on two days I have had them for 1 week. I think I can all ready see some improvement. I haven't really done anything except from gently backcombing a bit with my fingers. My plan for now is to go freeform. At least for now. But I will keep the robberbands in to secure the sections. Tonight, I think, I will wash my hair for the second timne since I made them and see if it works. In three weeks or so,when I have had them for a month, I will probably take out the bands. I will update you so others can learn from my experience.
