Hello all
I've been lurking a little as I'm just about to start my dreads tonight and I thought it would be nice to keep a timeline/journal this time as I have very few pictures of my last set (camera shy).
From memory I think I had my last dreads for only about 7-8 months. I did end up doing some of them myself but they were done mostly by different friends and random hippies that I travelled and stayed with at the time and so they were all very different and rather special to me. They were started with crochet and most of them were forming quite lovely however I did far too much "work" on my roots to "fix" them as they grew (trying to tighten them up in some spots, looping the dread through the root and using crochet on the roots) and I feel that this greatly hindered their process and ruined their look in the long run. So it was mostly the roots being crocheted and looped that I didn't like on a few in particular but the rest of the dread lengths were working out well (although a couple were far stiffer than I liked) and the roots I didn't touch were great. My hair at the time was also died a very deep, dark ginger/auburn with natural henna and I really wanted to grow out my natural hair colour for the first time in about 7 years.
And so I cut them all off, brushed out the roots and was left with 2in long, very shaggy and awkward looking hair in my natural colour. As my hair grew back I trimmed the bottom to remove what I felt was becoming a long mullet but now that I'm ready to dread again I actually regret this a little. The extra length on the back locs would've been great.
Oh well.
It's now been about 22 months since I hacked off my dreads, my hair is past my shoulders, and I'm ready to start again - a little differently this time! I will be mostly doing them myself but my partner may do a couple as well, we'll see how we go. I had been initially thinking of doing partial dreads and going from there but I've got dread fever again and now just want to dive straight back in. I've just started dreading my partner's hair with tnr as well.
I plan to use tnr method this time and then just let them do their thing with minimal (if any) interference. I am so excited to watch them form and get all crazy!
I'm also about 6 months pregnant so will have to convince my midwife that my dreads are not the result of depression but are a very deliberate and happy choice! They should be rather feral, loopy and mental looking around when the postpartum home visits start so I'll have to prepare her before then! haha
Currently in the process of slowly sectioning my hair and fretting about many dreads I'll get and how thick they'll end up...
Anyway, I haven't got any photos to share just yet but I look forward to sharing this journey with you all and learning from each others successes and mistakes!
Wish me luck, and any tips would be lovely!
