When doing the twist and rip method, when first creating a dread, should it already feel tight and compact? I tried with a small amount of hair to see, and it was already very compact.

I think it's supposed to feel pretty tight at first, yes. The biggest thing a lot of people have issues with for twist and rip is that they'll do too much twist and not enough rip, if that makes sense. I didn't do it the best way for my dreads, and they ended up looking more like braids for a while. It didn't do any damage, it just took them longer to look like actual dreads. So if they start looking braided, you're probably twisting too much

No problem for me. It was basically a test dread. I was trying different methods of twisting and ripping, and I found that I do a lot of both, even rotating the direction of the twist at some points. I'm also just wondering why it starts about .5 in away from my scalp?

Do you mean that there's loose hair for a bit from the scalp to where the knottiness begins? That's normal and something you definitely want as dreads that are too tight at the root can be really uncomfortable and cause discomfort and pain.
