So I've always admired dreadlocks on others but never thought they were for me. Recently I've had a bit of a spiritual awakening and realized there was no reason why I couldn't do whatever the hell I wanted to with my hair! I figure I've done almost everything else including shaving my head after my attempt at a mohawk... After doing some research, during which I definitely got a little obsessive lol, I decided to back comb to start. I wanted to have sections present but still be fairly naturally forming, so no wax or crochet needles for me.
Anyway, here's the before, complete with sleeping baby:
I didn't get any in process photos since I did it all myself, except for my mom helping with sectioning a bit. Here's a few days after I got them all backcombed:
2 weeks:
1 month:
I'm not sure how well you can tell from the photos but almost all the sections came loose in the back sometime within the month. I debated whether I should leave them alone or redo them... I finally decided to try some tnr a couple days before a month. I haven't redone them all yet... It's hard on your arms!!
I feel like my hair looks pretty normal at first glance hah
The bangs are growing out and I haven't felt like cutting them. I might knot them up once they get a little longer...
I haven't experienced any issues at work, but I haven't told anybody what I'm doing and I usually clip it back so I don't think you could tell anyway. I'm curious if anyone has had difficulty in a hospital setting.. I work for a separate company contracted in by the hospital and it's the company that doesn't allow colorful hair (which I've asked about in the past). I am thinking if nobody I work with has an issue it will be fine so...
Some photos from the past week or so... 2 months now!
Embracing the wildness
Getting a few loops!
I tried a little t&r on a few spots since almost all of the back came loose.. All I wonder about is the sections but I guess they will sort themselves out. Yay!
**3 months**
**4 months**
It was at this point that I added more tnr because it was bothering me so much that everything kept coming loose. I redid almost half my head I think. Which, of course, most promptly fell out in the next month or so.
**5 months**
Not the best pictures...
Then we are at:
**6 months**
Update 12.30.16
The back is definitely locking faster. It really helps me to look back to previous months to see the progress when it sometimes seems like nothing is happening!
A couple of the best loops
What a fun crazy process!
I apparently took no pictures at 7 months...
**Update for 8 months**
Ok guys, it's starting to feel like things are happening! At first glance it's still pretty unassuming...
But when you look closer there are several funky sections!
The very back bottom layer of hair is still loose, but there are definite sections now.
Here's a good look at the sections on the sides. You can tell I sleep on my left side, it's much fluffier over there lol.
I tried to tnr a few other spots awhile ago but in the back underneath, and a few other random spots insist on staying loose until they are good and ready to lock themselves, thank you very much! My hair has quite the personality, apparently.
**9 months**
I finally busted out the good camera to take some proper pictures.
It's getting so long! I honestly think the not brushing has helped it grow faster. Or I just notice the growth more? And I thought I'd see such shrinkage!
This is a comparison of 3 and 9 months into the process.
I still have gobs of loose hair, and it definitely bothers me from time to time how long of a process it's been. I look at other timelines and try not to be envious of the swift progress I see in so many! But overall I do love my hair, how long it's getting and how it has taken on such a personality. And I just continue to look forward to the progress to come, however slow it is 😌
**10 months**
One shot outside before our crazy Oregon weather decided to change its mind and rain...
This one has been solid for a couple months so I tried a wrap.. but I think it's time to take it out!
Husband photo bomb...
**11 months**
I've started getting a little more rough with my hair when I wash it and before I sleep. Like swirling it around and rubbing it together. The back underneath, which has been the most stubborn, has begun to lock more and I've even had to pull sections apart since I started that.
I guess I like to play with my hair? I ended up doing some tnr to a few loose sections in the front. Not really because they're bothering me but rather because I was just messing around. Hah.
^^this also shows the fattest dread with such a weird section which I never would have chosen and it's all flat... it has lots or character!
I have several sections locked from the bottom like this. Almost at one year... I can't believe it!
