Before I begin I'd like to thank you in advance if you were able to take the time out to read and help me out. It is greatly appreciated😊 I've been on this site browsing for a few months and just joined yesterday!!!
I started looking into dreading my waist long hair in October of 2015 and finally started the process in May 2016. I wasn't confident in starting them myself so I decided to go to a local salon to see a hairstylist that was well known for her dreadlocks. (I later learned they were synthetic sew ins) So here's the issue I'm running into today, or maybe it's not an issue, I don't know so I need help!
She started out by sectioning my hair into three sections, used a "texture iron" on each section, then sprinkled locking accelerator throughout the sections to help lock up the hair. She then started at the back of my head, around my neck. She would take hair, section it into a lemon shape, then backcomb the crap out of the small section. When she was finished she would sew thread into the root of the newly back combed dread. When I say sew, she used a plastic needle and thread, sewed the thread in all different directions at my roots to keep the root of each dread in place. So basically, the roots to my dreads, at least half inch worth, were super skinny and held together with thread, similar to an embroidery wrap, only the thread was woven in and out of the dread. I was under the impression she would go back through and cut them out after she completed my whole head. But when I asked her about it she said to just leave it in there and act like it isn't there? Well it seemed to be okay, I still think it might be but I'm just not sure. I've cut some of the thread out myself but left most in. They are knotting just fine, at least I think. some hair has even started knotting over the thread. The problems I seem to be having though are, some bulging bubbled like hair coming out of the threaded area, buildup around the thread (like dandruff) and they are still super skinny where the thread is still holding that section of the hair together. Also, I was pretty stern about NO wax, however I was talked into using a "light wax" because my hair was SOOOOO fluffy. I was also afraid I wouldn't be able to pull them back for work being that fluffy. (Looking back I would have been fine) However that was the only time I used wax. I left it in for a week before washing (as instructed by the stylist) I'm quite confident I've gotten all the wax out and have had it out for a while. I was dangerously very vigorous with my 1st wash, used very hot water. I was determined to get the wax out. I was pretty certain they would not untangle. When I say the stylist back combed the crap out of them, she did just that. They were so tight they came with a 2 day headache. So my questions here are ... Should I cut the thread out or leave it be? Did I make a mistake using wax? Will my 70 baby locs be okay?
