Hey guys! Finally I got around to making a profile and starting my timeline. I've had dreads for 14 months now, and thought I'd share my journey and also get the chance to ask a couple of questions. I started my dreads my by getting a hairdresser to make my sections, then TnR'ed myself, which took around 5 days. Since then a lot of dreads have come undone at different times so I've had to re-do them, and even now (14 months in) I still have one or two I need to do. In the beginning didn't do a lot of maintenance except for washing and pulling them apart. I started to see a lot of loose hairs after about 6 months and then begun to wrap the loose hairs around the dreads. However, that came undone pretty quickly, so about 10 months in I bought a crochet hook and I now use that to weave in the loose hairs. That seems to work, but takes some time For some reason my dreads starts knotting up at the tips first. They loop and double up at the tips, but not at the rest of the dread, which means I have skinny dreads with fat tips, and I find that kinda weird. It's not the worst, but I must admit I don't love the look of it, I'd prefer them thicker at the roots, or the same thickness all the way down. So this is one of my questions: is that normal? Will it change? Can I do something to get the rest of the dreads to knot up? Cheers! Helene Before dreads: Sectioning! Day 1 Right after showering - that's why they look kinda greasy-weird 😅 Loops really beginning! Also 2 months Loopies going crazy! I trimmed some of the tips around this time to make it a bit more even (I had grown out my short hair and thus it had some funny differences in length) You can start to see how much they double up, but only at the tips for some reason. Around this time I started palm rolling after washing them which made them more dread shaped and a little less wild Then I bleached the tips! I realised that my hair was way longer at the back which was why I've been hesitant to wear it down, it looked kinda silly. So I gave the tips a trim and I'm really happy I did! Before. After. Bob style!

I now realise I don't know how to add photos, but I'll try to figure it out! Do you need a PC to do it or is it possible on mobile?

Hi Helene and locahontas, welcome to DT!
There's a mobile app called Tapatalk which lets you use the forum in a mobile-friendly way, including posting photos. Otherwise, you need to upload them to a third-party site such as Photobucket, Imgur, Flickr etc and then post the links between image tags for them to show up here.

Ha! I just figured out that's what the arrow in the left of the reply space in the tapatalk app is for.
Tech. Illiterate.

The easiest way to dread is to let it go. The hardest way to dread is to let it go.

Hey doll! Your babes are looking sooo good I have the same problem with my ends doubling up which is kinda funky and makes it where I can't put beads on them which I so desperately want. Love the bob on you too. I have super long wispy ends that at times I just want to chop them off because they look weird, but if I did I couldn't pull them back so I'm keeping it for now. The dye on the tips also a beautiful choice Can't wait to see how they progress!!

(forget the dates) Then Olly beat me to the picture uploading stuff (which is fine, he's in charge ), and then you didn't have pics till later, and THEN, I was just off in my own little world. hehe response- good questions. often wonder the same things. but then looking at your pics/reading your comments, well, everything seems fine and palmrolling, well this sortof answers the question as to what you can do, right? I palmroll too, but not very often. and I also have the tips wanting to dread first...oh, what you might consider for this is root rubbing or wool rubbing. I've heard you should be careful with this too, but like 15-20min at a time like a few times a week really does help the roots get going. I'm still kinda winging it myself, but that's my two cents. hehe best! looks great! ( and I'm jealous of yours too (jelly)! but then t&r go a bit faster than neglect, so...I'll get there too. )

Aaaah there's part of me that wishes I had started dreads with short hair as I never had the crazy mad hair stage.
Really coming on Helene! Love them

I want it so bad too but my ends are super thick and the dreads super skinny so it's so weird. I did find some thin metal beads on Amazon though that open up, so I can wear those and they're super cheap too I just saw your timeline, your dreads are awesome! They look really good already. And I quite like wispy ends, they give them a bit more wild and natural look I think some of mine have started blunting because they bend /double up but ive started to unpick some of those to keep the long ends haha. Thank you so much for your support! So great to hear what people with dreads think, other people are often so confused about what's going on with my hair 😆

For some reason some of my dreads are super tight at the roots (as in, they're kinda populating my scalp although I did nothing to them) but they still don't thicken. I think it might be because they are more free to loop and double up at the tips because they are looser and lighter, so I hope something will happen in time! And I'm sure your neglect babies will come along nicely!
