Addressing the 'Clubbed' end phenomena?

So, I've noticed that during the process there are some dreads that tend to knot up excessively at the tip of the section resulting in a club-like formation. 

WHAT TO DO?

Do these tend to even out and become a more uniform width over time?

What, if any, action do i need to take?
(Don't say 'palm-roll' because near as i can figure there are like 10 ways to interpret that tiny phrase)

You could always brush out the tips/clubs which should then make them lock up again more evenly?

Mine stayed loose for a few years before blunting, and as I prefer loose ends I just teased the hair out again. It's entirely up to you what you do with them.

So, I may be wrong and if someone here has had any success seriously impeding the formation of club ends please correct me, but in my experience if your dreads are going to have them then they're going to have them. The entire bottom half of my VERY long hair transmogrified into club ends. I became accustomed to them, but they are dramatically larger in diameter than the upper length.

Palm rolling, yeah I'm saying it, will help them become more cylindrical rather than flat, if yours have that problem. I treat mine like play dough snakes, only rolling the clubs, and it only makes a difference if it's done wet. If they're not flat or you don't care if they are then palm rolling is pretty much pointless, I believe; you're certainly not going to accomplish making them skinnier by doing so... then again, that may depend on how far along you are into the clubbing, if you caught them early you *may* be able to elongate the mass through rolling. I didn't want to interfere with mine at such an early stage so that's purely theoretical. Hells, I only just finished brushing my tips out: took me almost two years to be comfortable with any serious manipulation

Finally, there is hope--bit by bit mine, and I'm sure plenty of the rest who have the dreaded (ha, no pun intended) pendulums, have folded and scrunched on themselves from the club up (like a tightly coiled rope), so over time they are definitely becoming more uniform, though in my case it is a slow process.

There's a lot to be said for letting go and just watching the living work of art that takes place. I think regardless of what they do, you'll love them if they're for you ^_^

Thanks! That's part of the reason I'm doing this!
I guess I was just wondering how they will turn out if I just leave them alone. I only have a few with the clubbed ends, a few with already naturally blunted ends, and a bunch of hair aspiring to knots!

I have them everywhere too and the only thing I've found that works is palm rolling them while they're wet. Only issue is that takes a lot of time and energy and then they just club themselves back up in a couple of weeks lol. So for a temporary fix, palm rolling helps but maybe it takes multiple tries to work it out and make it permanent.

Taoistlocks: Good on ya! They'll definitely turn out fine, nothing to worry over ^_^

Naga: I've found repeat rolling treatments are definitely the only way to get the modification to take, but for me it was really only maybe four or five times for each and of course some were a little more stubborn than others. It's definitely a chore, I would do maybe ten per wash, there was no way I'd work on all 100+ every time

it's just your loose hair knotting upwards that creates the clubby ends. I know some people just chop them off. I'm almost two years neglect and chopped the ends off all my dreads just two weeks ago. it doesn't do any damage to the rest of the dread at all. I actually like loops and bumps, i just chopped mine for a change. now i have short dreads.

Are there sets of locs that don't ever form clubbed ends? Even without maintenance? Just curious.

Out of all my sets, I've never had clubbed or blunted ends unless I cut them. Then they eventually work themselves out back into curls. My current set it taking a little longer to sort itself out but it's probably because they have been winding up longer.
