I know a lot of people use products to start their locks. My question is how does this help? To me, it seems like gels hold the hair where it is, so how does the hair knot up? I started with twists and gel, but am considering foregoing the gel to allow free movement of the hair. Just wondering if and how products really help.

Wax and gels will get you "the look", back combing, crochet, and T&R will get you "the look" and will help accelerate the process. Nothing but time and nature will get you real dreads...imho.

I don't recommend any things like wax or something similar, it accelerates build-up and mess inside...

Aloe vera-gel may be okay to use.
