So I know I have asked this before but the dread is not getting fatter just tighter. The eoot is 4mm wide by 3 mm long.. the actual dread size is 2mm wide by 1/3mm thick.. is what grows out the root what's going to be fatter or will it be roughly the same size as that?

Dreads will definitely be thicker than the rooted hair. They usually end up like a pencil, the pointed side being at the root. Thickness is usually found in the amount of large and small loops you get within the dread itself.

Maybe I'm missing the question, but that looks pretty thick.

Maybe I'm missing the question, but that looks pretty thick. the root is 4mm(1.5") thick by 3mm(1") wide at the root. The knotted hair is 9 months old and has compressed to 2mm thick. The first month it was the size of the root but over the next 8 months it compressed to 2mm thick. Everyone says the get the size of the root but it just keeps shrinking not growing.. If it grows to the circumference of the root that's 4" thick!

Right now the circumference is 1.5" I can't imagine a dread being as thick as the root cause hair has spaces in-between and dreads compress that space with knots..

Yeah...I see what you are driving at.
A <--> B (hair pinched together near root) X <--------> Z (hair measured at points on scalp)
When I say dreads will be thicker, I mean from the perspective of A to B. Here all my dreads are thicker. From the X to Z perspective, doing a quick survey of my head, I don't have any thicker than that distance covered.

hey acid!
um...i just heard something on this topic, what was it? Well I remember that the dread will NOT get as big as the circumference of the section...this is not what I originally said or heard soo...whatever that means. Um but also that whether dreads compress more or expand also depends on the starting method
t&r expand (right? cuz they are really tightly twisted to start)
backcomb compress (because they start with the big messes of hair)
but I believe you did t&r right? so they should expand. Like jxbx says, they look really big tho! i mean they did expand! and...idk, kinda looks like the section size to me!?? 9months though. I can't say whether they will get bigger from personal experience...and I keep adjusting mine so it's hard to say whether mine will get bigger...seems like they're staying about the same circumferance right now tho.
long story short, yours did seem to get bigger, just not sure if they will continue to get bigger.

They are backcombed so they started out fat then compressed. So jxbx what you saying is hair at the root is always bigger then the actual dread? Cause that's how all mine are. Some of the root hair actually flares out and is bigger than the sections. but the dreaded stuff is smaller then the roots. Ahh so confusing not being able to show a fellow deadhead in person.

Here maybe this will explain it better. Green = section size Blue = dread size Yellow = how big dread would be if size of the root.

Here maybe this will explain it better. Green = section size Blue = dread size Yellow = how big dread would be if size of the root. i think that's what he was saying...that is what I am saying. the dread will not get as big as the green section. (And not that it the length of time of MY dreads matters, because my source has years experience in this...but mine i'm talking about are the almost 6months ones. I am a weird example cuz I did like all of it...t&r, backcomb but totally crocheted. the crochet makes them tighter, so mine expanded.... also, in case you missed it, I had to split one of my dreads. I did a kindof botch job, but she's still holding. but that pencil thing Jxbx described...i totally have that with this one haha literally pencil thin (mms) at the root and idk 1/2' circumference at the bottom-rough guess). but the section size originally was gah idk. i could never REALLY measure, but let's just say this...after the split, one part was up by my ear, the other at the base of my neck haha! So...idk 2inches square (well, rectangle)? i really don't know. but it is that 1/2" circumference now and then. sortof didn't split them all the way down center. lmao ) ok, gtg. hope you get the answers you're looking for. hehe

Phew! Cause they already take a good 3-5hrs to dry I couldn't imagine drying a 4" thick dread!!!

yeah...drying kinda sucks. trying to do like a towel tunnel to dry it, but I'm so uncoordinated...ok, coordination is fine, the towel just doesn't stay put and the dryer wants to suck up hair and towel and it's just a pain getting it just right...seems to help dry a little better tho! (faster and down to the core, not just the surface)
ideally, I'd have one of those salon drying things (the dome thing that covers the head) --------------------------------------------------------
oh, ok i came here to make a correction. lol my section (i measured last night) was like 2inches (not 4) in length, so like 2x1.75ish...but, i guess it seems larger on my head. :/
edit: ohhh, i must have already fixed that. (man! total brain fog lately!)

Here maybe this will explain it better. Green = section size Blue = dread size Yellow = how big dread would be if size of the root. Yeah... Green > Blue Blue > Red Red = a fraction of the diameter of Blue, undreaded hair nearest the scalp
