I want dreads, but I want them soft like all the way to the end. Like Christian's (or so they seem). Like brushed out at the ends and spongy throughout. Mine arent even spongy after the 30minute deep clean! Is this not normal or...?? Do I just have to comb them out until I get to the new growth to have soft dreads? But then will I be able to maintain them like this? Lazydreads , where are you for this one?!? I hope someone can help me though! ...or I might be combing out 90percent of my dreads ok, maybe more like 65 to 70 percent. Still, it is a lot!

Your hair is still really young and I don't think they ever really feel spongy mine are just getting harder and harder not really squishy Phoebe, I just meant they are hard to squeeze out the water because well...they are getting harder and harder, as you said. (new growth is still soft though aka kinda spongy) I just wonder how hard are they to get because I didn't think even rope ...or ARE they harder when wet? ahhh!!! like you said, I am still so relatively new so I have all of these concerns and questions... alethionaut , ehhh, i am talking about the crocheted ones...they have been stiff since like the first month or something??? (I have been whining about this for like 2 months now? remember? ) kinda partly why I started the new set...to have a better eh...control? or observation of the process anyway. so yours are...wait...not anywhere near hard or spongy? ---------------------------- this is what I know, or have been told/observed. The ends can get harder but the new growth grows out softer. and Christian himself has said he's grown out all of his original dreads and what he shows in his videos is this like very pliable and soft ends...like a paintbrush. (mine are like...sticks??? sticks with some padding on the outer part...again, with the new like 2-3inches of growth softer.). I think, right this very moment, they are still a little damp...but i can't squeeze any water out, because i can't squeeze them! My concern is how then am I to know when they are well first, clean, and then second, dry! You know? ok, again, really not trying to be whiny here. Just trying to understand this. thanks for the response thus far. sheds some more light...just idk...just want to know if I CAN get what I want here.... thnx

I have a feeling this may have somewhat to do with the texture of your strands. Mine are primarily medium/coarse but at places fine. The dreads in the fine-hair areas are distinguishably softer overall, both on the outside surface and as a whole unit. Then again a lot of that's probably relative--I've never had soft hair and I don't perceive my dreads as soft

Then again a lot of that's probably relative--I've never had soft hair and I don't perceive my dreads as soft eh, if you mean the natural texture of the undreaded hair? I'll have to argue this. My hair is superfine so, by that logic, my hair should be soft I mean, it was...and the new growth is...just the early on crocheted stuff...hold on...letme add this picture over here... ok, so this brillopad/steel wool (minus the residue...although there was some before I brushed out the ends) is how my dreads were feeling. i THINK? they are softening up a bit, but not spongy...like still solid on this inside. ok, just adding this pic/comment for the record and for possible future comments here. Thanks again so far folks! I think I just have to accept how mine are and as long as they aren't holding residue, I'm good.
