I have very high maintenance, super curly, frizzy hair but a very low maintenance personality. When I was little, I would constantly beg my mom to braid my hair into tiny little braids all over so that I wouldn't hafta fix my hair for a week. I had never seen or heard of dreads or I'm sure I would've begged for them when I was a kid.
Here's what my hair looked like all fixed up nice before dreads:
It took soooo much work to keep it looking nice and I felt like I couldn't do things I enjoyed because I would 'mess up my hair'. Ugh.
This is what my hair looked like without product. If I left it like this then it would soon turn into a huge ball of frizz.
When I came across the idea I could actually have hair that looked good that didn't need excessive care, I was so excited! I decided to try one pet dread out underneath my hair. Here it is at a year old:
I loved how it was turning out so on July 4, 2014, I decided to go for it and do my whole head. My awesome, cosmetologist sister sectioned it for me:
The next day I started back combing the sections. 14 hours later, I had these crazies springing out of my head:
One Week Old:
After first wash:
Three Weeks
One Month
One and a Half Months
Two Months
Two and a Half Months
Three Months.
The front two sections of my hair came completely out and didn't want to tangle, so I decided to braid them and see how it goes.
Three and a Half Months
One week after I took those pics ^ I spent the weekend at the beach and my hair shrunk and tightened a lot from swimming in the salt water!
Four and a Half Months
Five Months
Five and a Half Months
Six Months
Six and a Half Months.
I brushed out the paddle ends and braided them.
Eight Months.
My two braids in the front are dreading up nice!
Eight and a Half Months
Ten Months
Eleven Months.
(I was very sick from pregnancy the past few months and forgot to take pictures so I had to scrounge around to find a few that showed change)
Twelve Months
Twelve Months (after the trim).
So, I was very pregnant and very sick. My ends were driving me crazy. They felt itchy and I didn't like the way they looked. But I loved the rest of my hair. So I decided to chop off the crazy, fat ends and just rock me some short, spunky dreads.
Fourteen Months
Fifteen Months
Sixteen Months
Seventeen Months
Eighteen Months
Twenty Months
Twenty Two Months
Two Years!
Two years, Four Months
Two and a Half Years
