I know I'm probably making this a lot harder than it needs to be, but I'm kinda freaking out about sectioning my hair. I have really baby fine, thin hair, and a small head to boot. I want my dreads to be as thick as possible, so I was going to go large, and section my hair about 1 1-2" squares. But now I'm worried I'll look bald and am thinking 1" or even 3/4" squares. Is there anyone out there who's put dreads in thin hair and can offer some advise?

I have thick hair but I've seen several people with thin grow perfectly healthy locks. You really don't need to worry too much... anywhere between 1" and 1 1/2" square should be fine. And you can always try and combine locks later if you really need to. As your dreads grow and mature, the roots will probably try and eat each other anyway so you may find that the sectioning adjusts itself if you don't separate. So no need to worry.

Dreadlocktruth , I find that "square" thing a bit funny. I could never get "squares", then again, mine are altogether random and just go naturally. earthmother03 , I know it's easier said than done (to not freak out), believe me...ask magpie there, lol, but yeah, you really will be fine. Um gee fine hair, small head...that rings true here hehe...trust me, you don't wanna go too large. I ended up redoing one, split it into two...because they thicken over time. I am experimenting with natural right now. I mean I attepted some sections, did backcoming, but after the wash, the sections kindof tangled together a bit. If it IS more natural, you can separate easier as they go...you can adjust sizes better or sections better as you go for the first few weeks? Months? I am on week one right now (but I already had some fullyish formed partials to help with the knotting process) Sorry this is so long, but it is nice to be on the giving end now. Still not as experienced as magpie or many others here, but well, I am learning fast. sorry for this long response..but I like to be thorough it is too hard on this device to fix that, lol but i see i apologized twice. Didnt mean to dothat.

I did mine myslef. Thin sparse hair. I made approx. 1 inch sections. If you check out my timelineyou can see whats going on this far. Theyre about 2.5 months old now, i do find that at the moment i wish some of the dreads were thicker. But in time they will thicken up to their mature size (which will be about as large as the section you choose). It all takes a lot of time. Your initial result will be nothing like the final size (im learning patience as i go along). I just started to notice the thickening and things are finally starting to happen.. Im so glad i went with the sectioning i did.

Thanks everyone. Thanks for the suggestions. I finally stopped being a control freak and just let my husband section it. It wasn't easy, because he was telling me the whole time that he thought he was messing it up. But he did a good job, and I'm really happy with my new baby dreads.

My husband helped me section too, the whole time cautiously complaining that he had no idea what he was doing! Everything turned out fine; it's invaluable to have someone who can see the back of your head when you can't!
Sectioning is important, but you can make changes of you catch then quickly. (Quickly in dread terms = months.)
If a section doesn't feel right, combine or divide out. No trouble.

Personally I'd start with the smaller option - 3/4", as you can always combine later but they are harder to split if too fat! Mine were around 1" and while they seemed thin at first, they've thickened up now. As for the baldness thing, you will notice it early on but once your new root growth starts and spider webs across, it will cover it ^^
