Used to have a more extensive timeline on the old forum...not quite sure what went on with the forums since then, tried logging in many times only to be met with errors. Anyway, coming up on 3 years next month for me so I thought I'd pop back in and post an update. Started mine in May of 2013, I backcombed (Big mistake - lots of damage. I'd never do that again. Do yourself the favor of going natural if you're thinking of backcombing). First year was kind of hectic separating poorly sectioned areas, trimming off damaged ends etc. By about year and a half I was satisfied with the sections and just let everything go. Since then all I do is wash it and let nature do its thing. Day 1: Somewhere around a year: 2 years: About a month off, but as near as makes no difference, 3 years:

After you decided to go natural after backcomb do you find that the dreads section them self better naturally ? Oh yes, very much so! If I kept my original sectioning they would be about twice as thick as they are now. They werent very "square" at the roots, some were very long rectangles and weird L shapes. Over about the first year and a half I was slowly separating sections that were pulling and causing pain, or others that clearly showed they wanted to grow in 2 or 3 smaller locks instead of what I had backcombed in. Thats my main gripe about backcombing...sometimes your hair just doesnt "want" to grow in the sectioning that you chose, and you can either fight it and try to force it to grow that way or just let it do its thing which is way easier! Everything has settled since then, and even got a few that have congoed up. Then theres the new growth that either forms a new lock or latches onto another.
