Hi nessdeyali ! I have curly hair, not as tight as yours though. I found pure aloe gel to to be magic when my dreads were first started. It doesn't hold them as tight as other residue-leaving gels but that's good because your hair can still loc up. Also, I have covered my dreads at night since day one! My cat sleeps on my pillow so I have to, but I feel like it keeps then cleaner and neater anyway.

Ok dear, well I've finally caught up (sorry it took so long, especially as there isn't even much here.) Anyway, well hmm not much to add to what has been said and what I said I did/do. Um...except that I agree it does look very oily right now...but the locks themselves look really awesome! like idk "coils"?? I'm really pretty new to this, I have only had mine for what, just under 4months right now, have been watching LazyDreads (see left side for link) religiously, and...yeah idk just learning by doing, seein what works with my hair/what doesn't. Wish I could be more help, but I think the thing is just to have patience...I think the thing was to find out the washing routine, and I think someone said this already. Oh, but personally, I think I still showered every other day, as I always had, in that first week...ok, maybe there was a 4 day gap, but really, I have to maintain cleanliness (body and hair) sooo, but since, I have been using just a water spray on the inbetween days and well, now I have got a dry shampoo that I can try. With as "greasy" as your hair appears right now, I'd say you may just benefit from more frequent washings. idk about looking like that rapper guy...I don't want to contradict Dreadlocktruth, because he's been at this A LOT longer than I have, but I think you could get that fullness. Idk. I have faith, or something. LOL hey um, do you mind me asking where you are from? Nothing specific, just wondered if you were from the States like I am. (It really seems that there are less "Americans" here. That or they just haven't returned from the old site or don't talk much. Ok, well, best to you!

thought of one more thing...you asked if you could tie them up? hmm, not sure if that's a good idea. Or did you mean like small rubber bands or one big ponytail? My thinking here is that a ponytail might inhibit hair growth. If you do do it (ie: work) then definitely, you should take it out when you come home, and sleep with them down. Ok, those are just my thoughts.

The sectioning seems like the standard inchxinch so after time (possibly quite a while ) they should fatten to those in that picture. Mine were started about the same size, and I have a couple that are comparable to those pictured (3 years though!) As others have said, your hair looks sooo very oily, so just wash as much out as you can, and let time do its thing. You have the perfect hair texture for neglecting them! Also, someone mentioned aloe gel, but I'd advise to only use that when you really need to look smart; aloe is at risk of rotting, due to it being a plant! Good luck ^^

Hey!!! Looks like you did a great job with the twist n rip!!!! I also cannot speak about your hair type but I'm wondering about how the coconut oil on your scalp will affect your roots??
I do not cover up at night. I did initially but honestly found it too uncomfortable. I believe it's helped my roots continue to knot from the friction. A cat sleeps around my head at night ... I've just accepted that my dreads include cat hair.
Welcome to the forum and happy knotting!

Everyone's different, I always sleep with a sleep cap, I feel it helps with the "frizzies"

nessdeyali, my hair is curly like yours!! If you just let it curl onto itself, you will get dreads in no time. Here's how my first set (spring 1988, done natural) looked before it really locked up: I find T&R accelerates the process on curly hair quite a bit. I noticed that once they are twisted and interwoven together, the natural curl in my hair starts looping tightly within the interwoven confines of the "pre-dread," so to speak. They can jump dreads though as well, so you may be separating a few here and there as well...unless you want thicker!! Good luck, great start so far!!

nessdeyali, you're gonna love dreads. If you're like me, I could never do anything with my curly hair when I was younger. I use to try to straighten it, keep it short to hide the curls, run a big fro, use gobs of hold to prevent frizz+curl, etc... Nothing better, for my hair, than straight up dreadlocks

Decided to do an acv baking soda rinse today because I'm Super paranoid about the fact that I was started off with the mango lime gel / wax as well as have washed w dr bronners a couple times so to clean it up I did the rinse combined locks for thickness and pAlm rolled
Apologies for not posting pictures as I haven't got around to how to do so with the mobile browser since no more laptop
