I agree with Paul. Although my area is typically more white, I have had a man come up to me and tell me how much he liked them and that he cut his off when he moved to the USA to fit in. The convo quickly switched to my tattoos. That being said he was wanting money so i expect positive comments in that sort of conversation.

One thing I noticed this time around that I hadn't before. Sometimes the same people say "Black people have had to fight negative stereotypes about their dreads being dirty" and later "and anyway, those white people with dreads look like shit and they are dirty and stinky."

That's a great article, thank you for linking!
Lots of photographs and some information I hadn't come across before. I wish someone would write a good, thorough, culturally diverse book about dreads; I do know the big 'Dreads' book, but that is mostly pretty photos and people's personal stories. I'd love something more scholarly.

The easiest way to dread is to let it go. The hardest way to dread is to let it go.

I haven't had any real problems with this (thank goodness) and I work in a neighborhood that has a very large Jamaican population. They seem to take my having dreads as a compliment. I've had folks tease me by saying "Oh you must be Jamaican too" or say that I "look very Caribbean".

Ive only had a few people give me problems about my hair, and they've all been white. I think we all just need to chill and let peace prevail and let people be who they are. I seriously dislike the concept of race and we all have to realize we're all just people, man. Enough with the divisions and fighting, yanno?

I don't get shit over my dreads even when people try. Not giving a Fuck goes a long way towards being able to stand proud in the face of idiocy.

I get quite the mix of comments, from awesome hair to how do you wash/ how often do you take those out to wash your hair to how could you do that to your self, you'll never get a boyfriend looking like that. And every once in a while i get the scared old lady who stares in disbelief and makes extra effort to go around me.
For the most part people are just curious and want to touch or know how I did it. Of course this time around I live in a very white town.
Last time I lived in an area where white people were the minority, then I was threatened, people in shops refused to sell to me. Kids would yell racist things and tell me that my hair didn't make me black, I was charged extra at locticians for having 'Caucasian hair'. In the end I found a Loctician who not only didn't care what type of hair I had but had no problem showing up at my house (no extra charge) early in the morning to work around my schedule, she cleaned them up for me and explained a lot of the things I was doing wrong, she never charged me since she felt so bad for the way the community had treated me. In the end I cut them off because I didn't like their sectioning and while she didn't see a problem with it told me there was not much she could do to fix it.

@lipstick I know the "terrified old lady" look you mention, well! I always try to act as over-friendly as possible to make them feel at ease, I probably look ridiculous to everyone else.
I'm sorry you went through that, with the community, that must have been awful.

My boyfriend is black & whenever we see something he deems "too hippyish" he'll say "that's something white folks with dreads do" LOL

Dreadlocktruth, if I'm in the mood for it I flash the little old ladies th biggest smile I can, if I'm not I just ignore them. The community was horrible, but it was a great learning experience. It's also experience that I share quite frequently with all the racist issues going on over here.
