Well I just got fired today. And I live in a town that has a crazy high unemployment rate so I'm considering combing out my dreads to give me a better chance.
I've had these for about 3 years, I love them but not everyone else does. I'm still on the fence about it... anyone want to weigh in?

I am so sorry to hear that you lost your job sweetie. (Hugs). If your town is anything like mine, I understand your contemplation. Having had them for 3 years would make it difficult for anyone in the same situation to brush them out. Especially for seeking new employment and not because you are ready to let them go. What I would do is invest in a long haired wig to cover them up. My Pops had long hair back in the 70s which was frowned upon. He decided to purchase a short haired wig to find employment and it worked for him. I wish you the best of luck and sending good vibes your way.

Are you able to put them up in any kind of tidy bun? I know some unemployed ladies here have taken that approach with interviews before and successfully found employment.

Oh man. That really stinks. I hope you find something soon. I worked at a bank for a while with bright orange hair.( Like the chick in fifth element. ) and they were content as long as I wore a wig to cover it. So in other words I second the wig option. That is if you can get them into a wig. Maybe worth a shot before you comb them out. Goodluck

Haha ha. .ʕʘ‿ʘʔ Your dad actually wore a short haired wig over his long hair to get a job! That's amazing. Ha!

Hey thanks for weighing in, tried putting my hair up in a bun and because of the way my hair dreaded the base was not smooth. The wig was an interesting concept, Whopi Goldberg does that actually. And just like her I would need a really BIG wig.
So I talked it over with my husband and we both agree for the time being it's best for me to take them out. I've started the long tedious process of combing and conditioning (funny moment in the store I haven't bought conditioner in 3 years I had no idea what in was doing).
But this doesn't mean I'm leaving you guys and it doesn't mean I won't have dreads again, but much like an actor gains/ looses weight or dyes their hair for a role this role has ended and I'm getting ready for a new part.
I really do wish it was completely on my own terms but sometimes I need a kick in the ass to get my life back on the right track. After all I hated that job, they were horrible to me and were holding me back from enjoying life.
Good news my husband gets home in a few days, it's been months and now I don't have to worry about having to work durring his short trip back home. (He's been deployed for months and gets to finnaly come home for a few weeks)
Anyway this has been a really long post so I feel the need for potato.

I know some folk have combed their's out gradually over several weeks in the past. I tried uncombing one of mine I cut off and it just bent and broke a metal comb.

You know, something really weird about coming out dreads.... when I helped Sez with hers, it took two of us about 16 hours. And when I've combed out individual dreads of my current set for whatever reason, it's taken a couple of hours per dreads. But when I combed out my first set after four years.... I managed my whole head in less than 5 hours o.O I have absolutely no idea how I managed it, I must have not realised how much I was damaging the hair in the process (I cut it short straight after) or it just being because my first dreads were quite thin.
You can post a picture by hitting 'add attachment' in the top right of the full message editor (not the 'quick reply' box) or via imgur.com
Good luck!

well im almost there, i have to keep taking breaks so my scalp doesn't hurt so much... i miss the volume already! and the ability to tie my hair back with my hair. now I have to keep looking for an elastic. Had some mixed reactions from people in town, most were just sad to see them go... never realized my hair was what was giving some people courage. weird! talk soon.

Yeah, you find out how much your dreads mean to other people when you decide to ditch them.
(speaking as someone who's had several "noooooooo!" moments recently...)
