Awesome! I've got super fine thin hair too, and image two really struck me. (Well a lot of them did!) I also happen to have partials, but I extended mine up a bit higher because the crown is my happy dreading place and, as you had explained, dreading partials is a super pain! (But I am the stubborn and determined type-i actually got it sorta working for me now, instead of the other way around...mostly ) Anyway, welcome to the site and wow, you've got some really fun zigzags going on! And that "solar flare" (last pic, as it were) I have always loved those ends! Yep! You're definitely on your way!

The easiest way to dread is to let it go. The hardest way to dread is to let it go.

Thanks everyone! I'm embracing the zigzags and loops as they're giving me lots of extra volume!

I just joined and will be starting my dreads (first timer) this week. I hate to sound glib but what does it mean to "loop". Thanks and stoked to be a part of the forum.

I just joined and will be starting my dreads (first timer) this week. I hate to sound glib but what does it mean to "loop". Thanks and stoked to be a part of the forum. Oh dear, you are going to be fun! Forgive me, I just get excited when people are excited about...well, learning! So, "loops" are when the hair begins to dread. Actually, I am finding out firsthand, that it happens a little further in the process, especially with us fine, thin, smooth hair types, but maybe others. See, the hair first gets knotty, and then other knots will build upon the first knots and this continues and continues until the section gets tight enough to where it cant hold any more knots. During this process, the hair actually appears to shrink up, because the knots take up less space vertically than the straight, loose hair. We call thisprocess, the "shrinkage" stage. And that is usually when one will begin to notice "loops". And back to your question, loops form when one part (like a few strands of hair) starts shrinking faster than another part of a dreaded section/a loc. Eventually, it will all catch up and you will get locs that are most commonly observed as "dreadlocks" which we call "mature dreadlocks". Loops are much embraced though because it shows things are happening, but also because of the interesting, perhaps aesthetically pleasing to some, character of the dreads themselves, before they develop into the mature locs. Not to sound discouraging, but this process can take some time...but it IS worth it...especially with support as on these forums. ok, now, I would suggest looking through the Knotty Questions (ah, I forget the title) Section and if you have questions, you can see if someone else has asked already, or you can create your own thread and ask questions, and there is even a Random Dreadlocks Thoughts thread, where you can just make random observations about locs. Hehe Or, you can go to Timelines Section (title is easier to remember) and you can create your own dreadlock journey timeline, with pictures, if you like, and people will encourage you throughout the process. Welcome!
