The thing about everyone eating vegetarian if a certain number at the group are is a new one to me (and I can't imagine it'd go down too well here, anyway - there's still a lot of stigma about not eating meat!) but I could see it maybe being the "polite" thing to do in other cultures. So it may not be that you got it wrong, just that it's not the case here. Speaking of which, Gillian's friend Lauren was a little uncomfortable because in the States apparently it's normal to "tip" the bar staff when you're out drinking and I had to keep reassuring her that it's not expected here, as she felt bad not giving them anything lol. a certain number meaning even just one. like I said, I probably misinterpreted it. I feel like I'm always doing this (am I REALLY crazy or do people just forget what they say in front of me? aye!) anyway, yea well idk about bars. ^^ but even dining out, it's customary to tip, what is it now? 15? or 20% of the bill, but many folks tip WAAAY more than that! But, haha, even my husband sees it as foreign and although he follows it here, he's like "this person didn't do anything!!!" haha and I'm like, "i know! you're right!" Thing is though, waitresses here get paid primarily in tips. The one case I saw firsthand was the waitress's hourly wage of $2 per hour (as opposed to like what is minimum wage now? like $5.50 or $6 or idk! point being, they get paid shit!) So...so yeah, I mean, I have to speak up for this. It's ridiculous here! But...well, ok I'll shut up now.

You'd tip here if in a restaurant. It's more as a show of thanks. But in general it's not expected. People are paid for their time, that's all you expect. ( speaking as a person who worked in a bar/restaurant and never got a tip).

yeah, so, it's just different everywhere and always confusing and that's why it's good to be in with the locals.

I used to work in an Irish pub in Houston and the wages just covered my rent and utilities. Living expenses came from tips. It's shocking really.

exactly!! oh, and for the record james , I wait for my change too...well I used to always do this. If i'm in a hurry or the service was alright, I'll just say keep the change. ohh!!! haha something I adore that my husband does is...he'll figure in the amount of the tip with the bill so that it rounds to an even number. So like 16.59 bill plus 3.41 tip comes to 20.00 even (did i do that right? haha i'm so slow, but i try) Amazing no?? Well, I think so, and that's the important thing.
