I run into a similar problem and I agree, time is all they need. In the mean time, I tie mine back/ up with the rest of my dreads which gives the look that my hair is bigger and thicker than it actually is. When I'm at home I usually leave them free flowing and only tie a few back to keep them out of my face. I also employ the super high pony tail, hang your head up side down and take a really big elastic to tie them up, when they fall it looks like you have more hair than you actually do... This is the high pony tail after a 9 hr day. as you can see my roots are very small and flat, I've also added volume by adding in wool.

Here are the top roots/sections problems... chad can you see the photos now? Hey lipstic, I'm putting the frontal 3 dreads back atm and yes: now the top sections are "hided" (not totally) but I'd really love to leave them free to fall on the sides... Guess there's nothing I can really do to make this happen (except for waiting) Thank you chad and lipstic for your replies!

Looks relatively normal to me...here's mine... I actually got some sun today so maybe that will help.

Hey!
I've struggled with being unhappy (and impatient) with the length of my dreadlocks. So I can understand that you are feeling blue about 'em. One thing I always kept in my mind was this: their dreadlocks and they are likely to change! Some days you'll dig 'em and maybe other you'll just want to throw in a bun. But regardless, they're groovy lil things and they become part of you, so try and find things about your dreads that you LOVE, and try not to compare your dreads to anyone else's (I can find myself doing that).
Hope my words found you some peace about your feelings on your dreads!

Hey! Thanks for your replies jxbx and auntcorduroy! I hope it is normal too! But as you can see, your sections are less visible than mine So it's normal to see the scalp I assume, I still can't look at it hahah I really hate the "balding" feeling! Yes I try to accept them as they are but some thoughts can't stop coming in mind haha I started dreadlocks to make my hair look puffy, frizzy, messy and I can see they are a bit more puffy, frizzy and messy than my normal hair, but the dreadlocks on top of my head really make me feel bad... Don't comparing my dreadlocks to others would be a nice solution, but it's really hard for me! By the way I will grow up all your words and tips inside me, thank you very much, to all of you
